How to Go From CLB 8 to 9 in CELPIP Writing and Speaking in 10 Days

If you’re already at CLB 8 in Writing and Speaking — with Listening and Reading at 10 — you’re incredibly close to CLB 9. The jump isn’t about learning new skills. It’s about fixing small, consistent mistakes in structure, word choice, and flow. In just 10 days, you can make the shift if you focus on precision, not volume.

What’s Holding You Back at CLB 8?

Most learners at CLB 8 make these tiny errors that hurt their score:

  • Using the same sentence starters (e.g., ‘I think...’) over and over

  • Forgetting to fully answer the question in Writing Task 2

  • Pausing too long or over-repeating words in Speaking

  • Not using a mix of simple and complex sentences

These aren’t grammar mistakes. They’re ‘clarity and flow’ mistakes. IRCC and Paragon Testing look for natural, smooth, confident English — not perfect grammar.

Fix #1: Master the 3-Sentence Rule for Writing Task 2

In Writing Task 2 (Email), your answer must have 3 parts:

  1. Direct answer to the question

  2. Two clear reasons or details

  3. A polite closing

Example:
‘I agree that recycling should be mandatory because it reduces landfill waste and saves natural resources. Many cities already do this successfully. I hope you’ll consider this change for our community.’

This structure alone boosts your score by 1 point. Practice this 5 times a day for 5 minutes.

Fix #2: Use the ‘Pause-Breathe-Speak’ Trick in Speaking

In Speaking Task 4 or 7, people often freeze after starting. Do this instead:

  • Pause for 1 second after the prompt

  • Breathe in slowly

  • Speak the first sentence out loud — even if you’re not fully ready

It tricks your brain into starting smoothly. No more ‘um… uh…’ — which lowers your fluency score.

Your 10-Day Game Plan

  1. Days 1-3: Do 1 Writing Task 2 daily using the 3-sentence rule. Record your reading aloud.

  2. Days 4-6: Do 2 Speaking Tasks daily. Use the Pause-Breathe-Speak trick. Time yourself.

  3. Days 7-9: Review recordings. Fix the same 2 mistakes you made in each one.

  4. Day 10: Take a full mock test — no new material! Just confidence.

You’ve got this. You’re not far from CLB 9. You just need sharper habits — not more study.
