Want to crush the CELPIP Reading section? These simple CELPIP reading tips and tricks can help you boost your score—no matter your current level. The key is strategy, not just vocabulary.
Know the Question Types Inside Out
The CELPIP Reading test has 4 main parts: short messages, long passages, matching, and multiple-choice. Each one asks for different skills. Practice each type so you know what to expect.
Tip 1: Skim First, Then Scan
Don’t read every word. Skim the passage for main ideas in the first 30 seconds. Then scan for keywords like names, dates, or action words matching the question. This saves precious time.
Tip 2: Underline Key Words in Questions
Circle or underline words like ‘NOT’, ‘BEST’, or ‘EXCEPT’. These change the whole meaning. For example, if the question asks ‘Which is NOT true?’, and you miss ‘NOT’, you’ll pick the wrong answer.
Tip 3: Predict the Answer Before Looking at Options
Read the question. Think of your own answer. Then check the choices. This stops you from being tricked by misleading options.
Practice Example
Passage: The library opens at 9 a.m. on weekdays and closes at 6 p.m. On weekends, it opens at 11 a.m. and closes at 7 p.m.
Question: When does the library close on Saturday?
Before looking at the choices, say to yourself: ‘7 p.m.’ That’s your target. Now pick the matching option.
Common CELPIP Tips and Tricks for Busy Test-Takers
Many people fail not because they can’t read English, but because they run out of time. Here’s our #1 trick: Always do the easier questions first. Skip hard ones and come back. You get the same points for every question.
Also, use the highlight tool! It’s allowed on the computer-based test. Mark important lines in the passage. It helps you find answers faster during review.
Remember—IRCC only accepts CLB 7 or higher for most PR applications. Scoring well on Reading gets you closer to that target. And these CELPIP reading tips and tricks make it achievable.
